Chemical Peels

Introduction

Introduction to Chemical Peels

Do you want to reduce the appearance of acne scars, uneven pigmentation, wrinkles, or other facial blemishes? Chemical peels are a non-invasive category of advanced clinical skin rejuvenation treatments that can address these challenges. Peels vary in their strength and type depending on the type of chemical being used. A peel’s strength is indicative of how deeply it penetrates the skin’s surface. If you are looking for chemical peels in the greater Indianapolis area, consider Hamilton Facial Plastic Surgery, founded by double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Mark Hamilton. With offices in both Carmel and Greenwood, Hamilton Facial Plastic Surgery offers a range of aesthetic treatments and procedures, including chemical peels, for clients seeking to rejuvenate their appearance.

What Is a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels are a form of exfoliation that can make your skin healthier and smoother. These skin rejuvenation treatments utilize chemical formulas to gently exfoliate the top layer of your skin, removing dead skin cells and promoting a smoother, healthier appearance. The body’s natural daily process is to regenerate skin cells and replace old, dead skin cells. A chemical peel accelerates this natural process. Furthermore, chemical peels stimulate collagen production in the deeper layers of the skin, thereby helping to achieve long-term, youthful-looking effects.

Chemical peels can be performed on all parts of the body: face, neck, chest, back, arms, and legs. Some clients may require multiple peels to achieve their goals.

What Types Of Chemical Peel Solutions Are There?

There are numerous chemical peel solutions available on the market, each varying in composition and strength. Alpha hydroxy acid, phenol, carbolic acid, and trichloroacetic acid are a few of the chemical formulas used. Some of them only remove the topmost layer of your skin, while others penetrate deeper into the skin. Although they have a bigger impact on your appearance, stronger chemical peels are considered more invasive, and you will spend more time recovering from one.

Chemical Peels First Step

What’s the First Step?

The first step in getting a chemical peel in Indianapolis is to schedule an in-person visit with one of our lead providers at Hamilton Facial Plastic Surgery. During the appointment, your provider will ask you about your medical and aesthetic history, as well as your goals and expectations. They will examine the area of interest, outlining the various types of peels available, along with their associated risks, benefits, and recovery timelines.

At the end of the consultation, if you both agree that a chemical peel is the right treatment for your goals, your provider will design a treatment plan for you. You can take this plan to our patient coordinator to schedule and receive a price quote for your treatment.

What to Expect on the Day of a Chemical Peel Treatment

Chemical peel treatments typically last a total of one hour at Hamilton Facial Plastic Surgery, and local anesthesia will be used. We will thoroughly cleanse your face and then apply the chemical solution to the surface of your skin. At this time, you may experience a hot sensation or mild stinging. We will leave the chemical formula on your skin and provide you with skin care instructions.

Chemical Peel Recovery

Your skin will start peeling a few days after receiving your treatment, similar to sunburn. This process removes the damaged, older top layer of your skin to reveal healthier, smoother-looking skin underneath. Recovering from a chemical peel typically takes 10 days or less, depending on the strength of your treatment. During recovery, your skin might be slightly red or tender. It may also be sensitive to the sun, so be sure to apply sunscreen diligently, especially during the first few weeks.
