Still undecided on a Necklift? You should see someone…

The necklift is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the neck and jaw line by removing excess skin and fat from the area. It is also known as platysmaplasty. While the face can show significant amounts of aging, the neck can gradually change as well. The neck area may have some sagging skin and excess fat or “bands” around it. Some people may experience this as a result of aging as the skin may not have the same amount of elasticity that it once had. Weight loss can also lead to sagging neck skin. The necklift is a solution to this problem because it will not only remove the loose skin, but it will actually tighten the muscles in the neck to create a more youthful appearance. It will provide more definition in the neck and jaw line for an improved contour.

Most candidates for the necklift are looking to improve loose, sagging skin around the neck and jaw line. Candidates for the procedure should be in good overall health, non-smokers, and have a set of healthy, realistic expectations regarding the results.

The necklift will usually involve either local or twilight anesthesia. The surgeon may make an incision under the chin, behind both of the ears, or both to begin the procedure. The excess skin and fat will be surgically removed and then the neck muscles will be tightened. The rest of the skin on the neck will be realigned to create a smoother, more youthful appearance.

The results will be apparent right after the procedure, but the neck area will continue to improve as the body heals during the next few days and weeks. There may be some swelling and bruising around the neck following the procedure. The physician may prescribe some pain medication to alleviate any type of discomfort during the recovery process. The dressings on the neck should remain in place for a day or so after the procedure and then they can be removed. Most people are able to recover from the procedure and pursue daily activities after a week.

If you think that you may be a candidate for the necklift procedure, it is recommended that you contact a qualified facial plastic surgeon to discuss your needs. The surgeon will conduct a thorough examination and recommend the right surgical solution to improve your neck and self-confidence.
